Essential Tips for Fertilizing Your Vegetables and Flowers

At Brady Nursery, we believe that proper fertilization is key to maintaining a thriving garden. Whether it’s a garden filled with vibrant vegetables or blooming flowers, this remains true. Fertilizing at the right time and with the right products can significantly enhance the growth and health of your plants. Whether you're nurturing tomatoes or your cherished peony bushes, we've got you covered with expert tips and product recommendations.

Fertilizing Your Vegetables

Tomatoes and other vegetables that have been in the ground for three weeks or longer are ready for a nutritional boost. Fertilizing them now will ensure they receive the essential nutrients needed for robust growth and a plentiful harvest. Side dressing is one of the most effective methods for applying fertilizer to vegetables.

Side Dressing: An Easy Fertilization Method

Side dressing involves applying fertilizer directly to the soil around your plants, providing a concentrated source of nutrients that the plants can easily access. Side dressing ensures the nutrients are delivered directly to the root zone, where plants can absorb them most efficiently. This method is especially beneficial for tomatoes and other heavy feeders, supporting steady growth and enhancing fruit production. Here’s how to do it:

  1. Choose the Right Fertilizer: We recommend using Fertilome Gardener's Special or Fertilome Tomato Food. These fertilizers contain both fast- and slow-release nitrogen, ensuring your plants receive immediate nourishment as well as sustained feeding over time.
  2. Application: Sprinkle the fertilizer evenly around the base of each plant, about 6 inches away from the stem, to avoid direct contact with the roots. Be careful not to let the fertilizer touch the foliage, as it can cause burning. Water the fertilizer in well and wash off any that touches the foliage.

Frequency: Repeat this process every two to three weeks throughout the growing season. Regular fertilization helps maintain soil fertility and promotes continuous, healthy growth.

Fertilizing Your Flowers

As the warmer months approach, it's the perfect time to focus on fertilizing the flowers in your landscape and pots. Proper fertilization will encourage vigorous blooming and robust root development, ensuring your flowers stay healthy and vibrant throughout the season.

Step-by-Step Guide to Fertilizing Flowers

  1. Choosing the Fertilizer: At Brady Nursery, we recommend two excellent products:
    1. Fertilome Blooming & Rooting (9-58-8) is a water-soluble fertilizer designed to promote vigorous blooming and strong root development. The high phosphorus content (58) is crucial for flower production and root growth. Water-soluble fertilizers are a great choice for flowers because they provide nutrients readily available for plant uptake. Be sure to follow the instructions on the packaging to mix the appropriate amount of fertilizer with water. Water-soluble fertilizers must be diluted correctly to prevent over-fertilization, which can harm plants.
    2. We also recommend using Fertilome All Purpose Plant Food (20-20-20). This balanced fertilizer promotes new growth and larger blooms. Its even nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium ratio ensures that your plants receive a well-rounded nutrient supply.
  2. Application: Apply the fertilizer solution to the soil around the base of your flowers. Be sure to cover both the root zone and the surrounding soil to ensure comprehensive nutrient distribution.

Rotation and Frequency: Fertilize your flowers every two to three weeks and rotate between Fertilome Blooming & Rooting and Fertilome All Purpose Plant Food. This rotation ensures your flowers receive a balanced diet, promoting continuous blooming and healthy growth. Regular feeding supports sustained blooming and helps your flowers withstand environmental stresses.

The Benefits of Regular Fertilization

Proper fertilization provides essential nutrients supporting vigorous growth in vegetables and flowers. Fast-acting nitrogen gives plants an immediate boost, while slow-release nitrogen ensures sustained feeding. Fertilizers that promote root development help plants absorb water and nutrients more efficiently, leading to healthier, more resilient plants. Using balanced fertilizers ensures your plants receive a well-rounded nutrient supply, supporting overall plant health and performance.
