Early Spring Checklist

Now is the time for all good gardeners to come to the aid of their landscapes. But, what exactly are you to do? Good question, as the answer will be different for everyone who asks it. For instance, do you have warm season or cool season grass? Do you have roses? Bulbs? And so on, get the picture? Well, to improve the picture out your window, here are a few pointers:

[weed and feed]LAWNS:
For warm season grasses (Bermuda, Zoyzia), apply a product Fertilome Weed and Feed Special (Simazine) Do NOT apply this product to cool season lawns, it will kill them. This product will kill most weeds and give a shot of fertilizer also. (THIS PRODUCT MUST BE APPLIED BEFORE THE GRASS GREENS.)

[fertilome]For cool season grasses (Fescue, Bluegrass), apply a pre-emergent when the Redbud trees around town bloom. If you applied Winterizer more than once last fall, you could apply Hi-Yield Crabgrass Control (Balan/Team). It doesn’t have any fertilizer. If you didn’t apply Winterizer last fall, well, you need to catch up. You can apply Fertilome Crabgrass Preventer plus Lawn Food (Team) or Fertilome All Seasons Lawn Food plus Crabgrass and Weed Preventer (Barricade). Come in and consult with our sales staff about your special situation to get the product you need.

[bulb care]BULB CARE:
You planted bulbs and you want them to last awhile. Well, to help insure there will be a next year, do not cut of the leaves after the bulb has finished blooming. Deadheading is fine, but to cut off the leaves is to cut off the mouth. Now is the time the bulb is gathering and storing nurturance to use for next year. Also, it wouldn’t be a bad idea to apply Dutch Bulb Food to help the process along.

PRUNING:
Now is the time to cut down all of your ornamental grasses. Remember, they should be considered flammable (NO SMOKING while doing this job!). While you’re out there, head out to your perennial beds and cut off last year’s growth. Shrubs like Vitex, Crapemyrtle, Buddleia, and Japanese Spirea would benefit from a “haircut”.[gardening products]

GENERAL:

Lastly, a few things that are never thought of until it’s too late. Spray for scale on roses, fruits, euonymus, and anything else that had it last year. Use Dormant Oil. This product is best used while the plant is, um, well, dormant, so don’t delay! Apply Treflan to your perennial beds to keep seeds from germinating into those pesky weeds. And, lastly, to those of you who like to grow your own, apply Lime Sulphur spray to Peaches, Plums, and Nectarines to prevent leaf curl this year.
